Introduction

The ability to work in a team is an important quality to possess. Like most skills, this one can be improved and developed through practice, experience, and reflection.

This peer assessment process allows students to:

  • Rate their peers' contributions numerically
  • Write constructive comments about their peers
  • Receive feedback from their peers
  • Work in a team and learn about their teamwork skills
and allows professors to:
  • Manage peer assessments in their classes
  • Collect student ratings of their peers' contributions
  • Aggregate the results
Some Additional Comments for Students

The purpose of this peer assessment is to rate the strengths and weaknesses of your team members. Note that a fair assessment of each team member's strengths and weaknesses is expected. Think back through the entire group work exercise and try to be objective in your assessment.

In this evaluation process you will be required to:

  • Rate your team members numerically
  • Write comments about your team members
  • Comment about the group experience in general

Rate your team members on a scale of 1 to 7: You will be asked to evaluate your team members along four dimensions (cooperation, conceptual contribution, practical contribution, and work ethic).

Write comments about your team members: You will also be asked to provide narrative comments about each of your team members. In this section you must justify the ratings given during the previous section. Please be as descriptive as possible.

Poor comment Good comment
Robert does not work hard! For our second meeting, we all agreed that you were supposed to provide us with a report of market trends in the automobile industry. You forgot to do it, and we had to postpone the meeting. You failed to do what you were supposed to do again for the presentation. We felt that we could not count on you.
Lisa is a good team memberWhenever there was a disagreement, you took the time to address the issue. The day before the report was due, we fought about how the bibliography should be written. You stepped in the middle, calmed everybody down, and helped us decide what to do. You really helped us "gel" as a team.

Remember: Your comments will help your team members understand how they are perceived by others and should not be used to settle scores. Disrespectful comments will not be tolerated, and will be removed from your team members' assessment. However, your professor will know if your comments were offensive or hurtful.

Comment about to your professor about the group experience in general: You must also comment on how the group worked together as a whole.
